It was back in 1931 that Dame Ninette de Valois formed what has become one of the world’s greatest companies – the Royal Ballet. It began at the Sadlers Wells Theatre, before moving to the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Over the years, many top dancers have performed on the great stage of the Royal Opera House as part of this company. Famous dancers have included Margot Fonteyn and Alessandra Ferri.
Over at the London Coliseum, the English National Ballet (founded by Dame Alicia Markova) has an equally stunning reputation for classical works. Other companies perform regularly at venues such as Sadlers Wells, the Barbican or the Peacock Theatre.
Although booking is recommended if you want a really good seat, these seats are often quite expensive. But you can get some really good deals even at the very last minute, especially if you are only in London for a few days.
Having found a ballet performance you want to attend, check out the availability of restricted view seats. These are often located in the balconies and may have views that are slightly obscured by columns or are at the side of the stage. Despite this, you can still see and enjoy most of the dancing. The cost of these restricted view seats is considerably lower than if you were sitting in the stalls, directly facing the stage.

Even cheaper still are the seats in what is often termed ‘the gods’. These may be high up in the theatre so that you are looking down from a distance at the stage. Or there may be standing room only tickets. If you are prepared to stand up for the entire performance, you can often get into the theatre for just a few pounds. Head towards any of the luxury hotels near Oxford Street in London for a comfortable stay & enjoy classic ballet with family.
At the Royal Opera House, about 60 tickets are released on the day of a performance. These same day tickets can usually be obtained online or by standing in a queue at the box office. Early queuing is recommended as these tickets tend to be sold very quickly. The prices are really good, and in some cases can cost as little as £5.
